MY STORY
As long as I can remember, I have always been passionate about food and nutrition. Even as a little girl, I used to ask my mom what foods were healthy, and it always seemed to be a part of our family discussions. But when I quit gymnastics at the age of thirteen, things changed.
Almost overnight, I went from a skinny and muscular little gymnast to a young lady, complete with extra body fat. In retrospect, this was very normal and a part of puberty, but for me, it was devastating. I began to exercise like mad and limit my caloric intake. I remember having a little calorie booklet and then exercising until all my calories were “burned off”. This didn’t make me feel good, and it left little time for a social life because I was exercising ALL THE TIME.
Luckily, this phase didn’t last long, and I soon realized that what I was doing was not healthy. I decided to tackle my body issues from a place of health and functionality. It was then, as a teenager, that I took a real interest in how the human body functions, and I started reading about what foods could support a healthy body. This thread carried through for the decades ahead, and I am still fascinated by the miraculous functionality of the human body and how much food can make an impact.
A couple years ago, I was once again faced with a personal health challenge. I was on top of my game at the gym and eating like a rock star (ok, if rock stars ate healthy), but had a really busy schedule raising two kids. Coupled with a marriage separation, I found it increasingly difficult to get motivated to go to the gym. I was burnt out.
Through my studies in Functional Diagnostic Nutrition®, I tested my stress hormones and discovered that I was in “adrenal exhaustion”, meaning my body was no longer able to respond appropriately to stress. No wonder the smallest things seemed insurmountable!
I immediately began a restorative process that focussed on eating really well, eliminating stressors and using appropriate exercise. I continue to follow this restorative approach to health to this day, and I am feeling absolutely fantastic!
A LITTLE GLIMPSE INTO MY DAILY LIFE
As a working mom to two active kids, my daily life can be described as pretty darn busy! When I’m not carpooling kids to school or the pool, working with my amazing clients or running errands, I can usually be found outdoors somewhere.
Whether it is hiking, biking, skiing or going for a walk with my kids, being active in nature is a favourite activity of mine. And when I’m not outside, I can usually be found in my kitchen, whipping up a new recipe, or enjoying a delicious meal with friends in one of Calgary’s many great restaurants.
