Food for Thought: Eating Consciously
Years ago, I read the book Women, Food & God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything by Geneen Roth. It really opened my eyes to the idea of conscious eating. I’m not talking about ethical eating (that’s a whole other post), but rather examining the deeply personal relationships we all have with food. The basic concept is that the way we eat is a direct reflection of deeply-held beliefs about ourselves. Much can be said about self-worth, purpose and the willingness to be alive by looking at how & what we eat. After all, food is one of the fundamental elements that sustains life, so it follows that a person who believes in themselves and their higher purpose will eat in such a way that will keep them healthy and able to fulfill their life’s vision. By examining our own relationships with food through conscious eating, we can begin a journey that connects spirituality with health.
Roth suggests seven ways to eat more consciously:
- Eat when you are hungry.
- Eat sitting down in a calm environment (not the car!).
- Eat without distractions (TV, computers, smart phones etc).
- Eat what your body wants.
- Eat until you are satisfied.
- Eat in full view of others, or at least with that intention.
- Eat with enjoyment, gusto & pleasure.
Yours in health,
Megan
