Gluten Free Holiday Entertaining Ideas
Need some gluten-free entertaining ideas? Although it might seem daunting, many recipes can be easily adapted, and there are also lots of old standby foods that were gluten-free all along (hello shrimp ring!). Here are a few of my favourite holiday treats!
Appetizers
- Bacon or Prosciutto-Wrapped Stuffed Dates – Slit Medjool dates and remove pit. Stuff with goat cheese or pistachios and wrap with bacon or prosciutto. Bake at 350 for about 10-15 minutes, or until bacon is crispy.
- Plantain Chips & Guacamole – You can purchase plantain chips, but they are very easy to make. Simply slice peeled plantains thinly and evenly, drizzle with melted coconut oil and bake at 350 on parchment-lined cookie sheet for 20-25 minutes. Serve with your favourite homemade guacamole.
- Meatballs – As long as they don’t contain breadcrumbs or flour, meatballs are a great protein-based & gluten-free appetizer.
- Cheese or Nut Cheese & Gluten Free Seed Crackers – If you can tolerate dairy, cheese is another gluten-free option. For those who cannot tolerate dairy, nut cheeses are a great alternative. These cheeses are often made with cashews or macadamia nuts. Note that they are often made with nutritional yeast, so avoid them if you cannot eat yeast products.
- Pate on Cucumber or Bell Pepper Slices – Pate is another superfood that can be made yourself, or purchased. Many store-bought varieties contain milk or cream, so look for dairy-free versions if you cannot tolerate dairy.
Desserts
- Flourless Chocolate Cake – This has to be my all-time #1 go-to recipe for entertaining! The recipe I use is from Martha Stewart, and I’ve been making it for years. In my opinion, it’s best served chilled, with a big dollop of whipped cream or coconut cream and some berries on the side. Click here for the recipe.
- Pavlova – Many years ago, I spent the holidays Down Under, and I got a little obsessed with making pavlova! This classic recipe can be made ahead and decorated with whipped cream or coconut cream and berries, along with shaved dark chocolate, for a very festive treat. Most recipes call for cornstarch, but you can use arrowroot powder if you’d like. Click here for the recipe.
